One of three photography groups in BaM u3a, Group 5 is aimed at amateur photographers with some level of understanding of the technology & skills behind the art of image making, or those who have an interest in improving their abilities. We can help fill in the gaps in your knowledge - and indeed vice versa!

Meeting fortnightly in Milngavie’s Waitrose Community Room, where coffee and cakes are always to hand, our typical format is to constructively critique a small number of our images, sometimes based on a topic, with a particular emphasis on composition & post production. We also discuss topics of interest such as new technology, equipment & editing software with a view to exchanging knowledge & ability, all in a friendly (& humorous!) learning environment. Field trips, including visits to interesting exhibitions, form a key part of the group’s activity & from time to time we have a guest speaker.


Although we are by no means a competitive group, we do have an annual competition! and the 2025 Joint competition results with Shutterbugs Group is available to view at P5 and Shutterbugs.

Your camera gear isn’t important. How you use it & what you do with the resultant image files is key, & here is where you can learn & exchange knowledge, tricks & techniques within the Group. If your preference is to use a mobile phone camera - welcome! We all use one from time to time, often via apps that expand the basic capabilities of the phone. DSLR, mirrorless, full frame or APS-C cameras of whatever age & sensor size are all in use by our group members, & we even have fun with older film cameras on occasion.

We have 7 members at the moment & are happy to welcome one or two more, group size being determined by the time given to reviewing images. Please contact our convenor via the link above for more information.
