Event type: Group Meeting
Date: 11th November 2025
Time: 14:00 - 16:00
Group: Science

Our talker is Billy Martin from the University of Glasgow (see below) talking to us about...

Biologics - exploiting the power of genetics and molecular biology to develop new medicines. It focuses on the cutting-edge technologies driving novel drug development, and covers the areas of recombinant medicines, monoclonal antibodies, DNA and mRNA vaccines, and repairing faulty genes. It is quite astounding what these new approaches are providing.

Billy Martin is Emeritus Professor of Cardiovascular Pharmacologyat the University of Glasgow. After graduating from GU (BSc, PhD), he took up research posts at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge, Downstate Medical Center in New York and the School of Medicine in Cardiff, before returning to GU as a lecturer in 1987. On retiring, he joined Bearsden & Milngavie u3a and went on to serve for periods as Vice Chair then Chair. In April 2016 he gave the inaugural talk of the BaM u3a Science Group. He is now also a member of East Renfrewshire u3a
