Jimmy Watson is Chair of the Friends of Thomas Muir and the organiser of the annual Thomas Muir Festival, which celebrates the life and legacy of the Scottish political reformer Thomas Muir.

Jimmy lived in Dublin for more than ten years, where he met his wife Julie. In 2007, Jimmy and Julie moved back to Glasgow to start and raise their young family. After returning to Scotland, Jimmy rejoined the family businesses, helping to manage Huntershill village in Bishopbriggs, as well as working with the long-established family haulage firm John S L Watson Haulage, founded in 1968.

Alongside his professional work, Jimmy has a strong passion for local community initiatives and the preservation of local history. Through his work with the Friends of Thomas Muir, he has helped promote wider awareness of the life and historical significance of one of Scotland’s most important democratic reformers.

In this talk, Jimmy will explore three key areas of Thomas Muir’s life that ultimately led to his trial for sedition and his transportation to Botany Bay. The talk will examine the political climate of the time, Muir’s role in the movement for parliamentary reform, and the events that led to his dramatic exile.
